NO. 5 - STATED MANDATORY DOCTRINE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
A. STATED MANDATES FROM JESUS CHRIST DURING HIS MINISTRY (30----34 A.D.). 1. All who desire to enter the kingdom of God, "must" be born again, of water and the spirit (Jn. 3:3-7). 2. All who desire to be true worshipers of God, "must" worship Him, in spirit and in truth (Jn. 4:24). 3. We ought to (must) exercise judgment, mercy and faith and not neglect to tithe (give one tenth to God)(Mt.23:23). 4. We ought to (must) use in a profitable way for the Lord, whatever money or gifts we receive (Mt. 25:15,18,27,30). 5. It is right to (we must) make merry and be glad, when those who turn away from God, return to Him (Lu. 15:32). 6. We ought to (must) always be in prayer, for those things we desire, and not lose heart or give up (Lu. 18:1). B. STATED MANDATES OF THE APOSTLES IN THE BOOK OF ACTS (34--------63 A.D.). 7. We must be saved through Jesus Christ; there is salvation in no other name under heaven (Ac. 4:12). 8. We must obey God rather than men, even if we are commanded by civil officials to disobey God (Ac. 5:29). 9. The Lord told Saul to go into Damascus and he would be told what he must do (Ac. 9:6). Three days later Saul was told to "Arise and be baptized and wash away his sins, calling on the name of the Lord." (Ac. 22:16). 10. An angel of God told Cornelius that Peter would tell him what he must do (Ac.10:6). After hearing the message of forgiveness through Jesus Christ Cornelius and his household were commanded to be baptized (Ac. 10:48). 11. Paul taught the early disciples that we must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God (Ac. 14:22). 12. The jailor of Paul and Silas asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (Ac. 16:30). He and his household were presented the message of salvation through Jesus Christ and were baptized the same hour of the night (Ac.16:33). 13. Paul instructed the elders in the church at Ephesus that they must labor to support the weak (Ac. 20:35). C. STATED MANDATES IN THE LETTERS TO THE CHURCHES (52------95 A.D.). 14. We do not know what we should pray for as we ought (must)…the Spirit makes intercession for us (Rm.8:26,27). 15. No one should think of himself more highly than he ought to (must) think, but to think soberly (Rm. 12:3). 16. If anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to (must) know (1 Cor. 8:2). 17. Christ must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet, and destroyed our last enemy, death (1Cor.15:25,26). 18. This corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality (1 Cor. 15:53). 19. We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive the things done in the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad (2 Cor. 5:10). 20. Let your speech always be with grace...that you may know how you ought to (must) answer each one (Col.4:5,6). 21. We urge and exhort...that you abound more and more...how you ought to (must) walk and please God (1 Th. 4:1). 22. For you yourselves know how you ought to (must) follow us, for we were not disorderly among you (2 Th. 3:7). 23. We must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard (about salvation) lest we drift away (Heb.2:1-3). 24. He who comes to God, must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him (Heb. 11:6). 25. Since all things will be dissolved, what manner of persons you ought to (must) be, in holy conduct (2Pet. 3:11,12). D. STATED MANDATES IN LETTERS TO TIMOTHY AND TITUS (EVANGELISTS) (64....68 A.D.). 26. A bishop (overseer, shepherd, elder, pastor) must be blameless, the husband of one wife (1Tim.3:1-6; Tit.1:5-7). 27. He must also have a good testimony of those on the outside...likewise deacons...likewise wives...(1 Tim. 3:7-13). 28. I write so that you may know how you ought to (must) conduct yourself in the house of God (1 Tim. 3:15). 29. Refuse younger widows...the idle, gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought (must) not (1Tim. 5:11-13). 30. The hard working farmer must be first to partake of the crops (2 Tim. 2:6). You must be patient to be rewarded. 31. Avoid foolish disputes. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel, but be gentle, able to teach, patient(2Tm.2:23,24). 32. There are many...whose mouths must be stopped...teaching things they ought (must) not...for gain (Tit. 1:10,11). E. STATED MANDATES FROM REVELATION (95--------------? A.D.). 33. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him to show...things which must shortly take place(Rv.1:1;4:1). 34. He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity: he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword(13:10). 35. When the millennium (1,000 years) is finished, the Devil must be released for a little while (Rev. 20:2,3,7). Jesus Christ is the author of eternal salvation unto all who "obey" Him (Heb. 5:9). He has "stated" certain action and events, as "mandatory." Whatever we are mandated to do, we must do and whatever God mandates will happen, we must believe will happen. If we are going to be true to the doctrine of Christ we must consider all mandatory doc- trines as "essential" doctrines. Stated mandates must not be thought of as simply suggestions or areas of "liberty." Being "born again" is not a matter of liberty; it is equated with entering into the kingdom of God. Anything that is "stated" as "mandatory" we need to take very seriously! God has specifically "stated" that some things "are necessary!"
